OPAQUE MEDIA

On the previous spread you saw how white ink could be employed to put in highlights on top of darker marks. The dense covering power of opaque materials allows you to draw light over dark in various ways for various effects. Different materials have their own characteristic marks and differing degrees of opacity.

Here I used a dark grey pastel for the main drawing, smudged here and there with a fingertip. To add the highlights, rather than carefully trying to erase back to the white paper it’s quicker and more sensitive to use a white pastel over the top of the dark drawing. The two tones can be blended by smudging, if required.
